Alternatives to Unpaved Mining and Construction Roads

Soil stabilization is almost always necessary for high productivity at industrial sites. DirtGlue® has proven effective and economical to achieve maximum accessibility in any weather and keeps projects on time and minimizes interruption. In considering the use of DirtGlue® polymer emulsion on roads, there are two distinctly different choices of application. One application penetrates more deeply to create a very dense, tough driving surface; the other is a surface application to control dust during dry periods and sediment during rainy periods in undisturbed areas.

The problems of drilling, mining, quarry, forestry and construction sites is wind-borne dust and water-borne sediment. Heavy equipment passing regularly over these roads causes the soil/aggregate to become extremely compacted, affording a very solid road base. Sediment in the run-off contributes to increased dust later as the water carries the fine particles of soil out of the top one or two centimeters of the road bed. This leads to a looser, rougher surface because the fine particles are no longer there to help hold the larger particles tightly knit together and the larger particles are ground against each other and against the substrate. A cost-effective remedy is needed.

Asphalt or concrete is not practical because of cost and the temporary nature of such roads in oil fields, gas fields, mines, quarries and construction sites. Moreover, the heavy equipment quickly degrades such surfaces. No dust control quickly leads to rutted roads but more importantly dust shortens the life of the equipment while increasing maintenance costs, more frequent air filter replacements, oil changes, and wear and tear on moving parts. In areas that receive an abundance of rain, muddy, rutted roads reduce the site's  accessibility and cut into profits when work is slowed or halted because of rainy weather conditions. A drilling rig and crew sitting dormant on such an inaccessible site is eating into profits. The increased costs are no less important regarding employee health and safety. The same applies to any construction or mining site, quarry or industrial yard.

An application that creates a heavy duty driving surface would, in a very short time, be covered with dirt and dust from the mining/quarrying/construction operation. Instead of sweeping or wetting the dust from the surface, spraying an emulsion of DirtGlue® would be a better solution. Generally, this would require a reapplication approximately twice a week during the driest season with some high traffic areas needing somewhat more frequent application and some light trafficked areas would need no additional application.

A sprayed-on application bonds all of the soil particles on the surface into one sheet. The sprayed application is strong enough that all dust would be trapped in a layer that will not permit any migration of the fine particles either by wind or by water. Undisturbed, the protection provided by DirtGlue will remain in place for up to a year controlling dust and sediment. Driven upon, it will break up readily. After only a few passes of a vehicle the now broken pieces would be still too large to carry away by wind or water. With more traffic the pieces will be broken into still smaller pieces eventually requiring reapplication.

In  many earth moving operations it has been shown that this type of application is far more cost-effective than using a water-truck on a continual or regular basis. Undisturbed areas never create fugitive dust or sediment migration, even over long periods of time.

DirtGlue is 100% environmentally safe, has been EPA tested and categorized as non-hazardous. Spills are not reportable, shipping requires no Department of Transportation placarding, and these products can be used safely within wetland buffer zones.

Applications for DirtGlue (polymer): mix-in/penetration applications

DirtGlue can be used effectively to stabilize the soil to create a hardened driving surface (2” thick) on dirt and gravel parking areas, access roads, private community roads, residential driveways, haul roads, temporary construction roads and any other application that will require stability and endurance as a result of soil stabilization. Other applications include pothole patching, resurfacing worn asphalt driveways etc.

We want to ensure success of every application. Mix-in and compacted applications are fraught with potential pitfalls. DirtGlue polymer mixed into soil and compacted yields an extremely strong surface and subsurface. The main pitfall here is to think that it is really that simple. Every mix-in application must be accomplished using road-building techniques and considerations:

  1. Drainage: The application will only perform well if the foundation is VERY WELL DRAINED
  2. Base and Subgrade: Both the base and subgrade MUST BE VERY WELL STABILIZED. This necessitates, geotextile / geogrid in areas of less than perfectly solid base soil.
  3. Soil: The next important consideration is aggregate size/type/hardness/gradation.
  4. Geometry: The shape, slope, pitch, crown, etc. to ensure water moves off of and away from the stabilized surface.

If all of the above are not met, the application might not be successful.
